Class Update #3 [Week of 12/17/12 – 12/19/12]

Due to the short week, Language Arts/Literature class will only consist of several activities while the students are in class. We have come to the end of our in class reading, Of Mice and Men. We will close the quarter in Literature with a trivia game centered around facts that were in Of Mice and Men. During the third quarter, the class will begin reading The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. More details will come when we return from break.

In Language Arts/Writing, we will close with several view & responds (Future of Cars – PBS and the History of Santa Claus – History Channel)  as well as writing prompts stemming from the previously mentioned media sources. When we return from the break, we will begin Unit 3, The Art of Story Telling. Students will learn how to write children’s books, do investigative reporting, oral history, a research paper, and a short story. More details will come when we return from break.

In Language Arts/Literature,  we will be completing the viewing Of Mice and Men on December 10th. During the rest of the week, we will begin Unit Five – Declaration of Independence in Literature of Language textbook. Students will read, from The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Without Commercials, and A Man Who Had No Eyes. Students will also work on Week #10′s vocabulary words. This week students will be given Week #10′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have one assessments in the form of homework due on 12/11/2012.  I will be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday.

In Language Arts/Writing, we have completed Unit Two – Express Yourself. Students have learned how to properly format as well as write poetry, collaging, letter writing, and essay writing. Week #9 [Q2]: Reading Of Mice and Men, Week #9 Vocabulary, Of Mice and Men Final Test, Viewing Of Mice and Men Movie, Essay Writing Assignment…

In Language Arts/Literature, students will complete reading Of Mice and Men on Monday (12/3). The students will also be asked to take notes in the following format: Question, Predict, Connect, Summarize & Reflect view [here] for more details. As we come to a close, we will be viewing Of Mice and Men on December 6th & 7th. Your child will bring this permission slip home for you to view on Monday (12/3). Please return the permission slip if you do not want your child to view the 1992 version Of Mice and Men [PG-13]. Students will also work on Week #9′s vocabulary words. During week #8, students learned the purpose and procedure(s) for an informative as well as an expository essay. During week #9, there will be an essay assignment. That essay assignment will entail students being tasked with writing an informative, expository, or a persuasive essay stemming from prompts on the novel Of Mice and Men.
