Week #10: Literature & Language Textbook reading, Vocabulary HW, Galileo Literature and Writing Assessments, and Research Paper activities/notes…

In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue Unit Six – Themes in World Folklore in their Literature & Language textbook. Students will be reading and responding to the following stories: Kelfala’s Secret Something, Prometheus, Where the Girl Saved Her Brother, Echo and Narcissus, The Emperor’s New Clothes, & How Odin Lost His Eye. Students will participate in AIMS preparation via AIMS Buckle Down – Lesson 12: Graphic Features Pgs. 146-154Students will also be taking the Galileo Assessment for Literature on Tuesday & Wednesday of this week. Students will be assigned Week #10′s vocabulary words. This week students will be given Week #10′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have one assessment in the form of homework due on 03/05/2013.  I will be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday.

In Language Arts/Writing, we will continue Unit Three – The Art of Storytelling. Students will learn how to write a short story, write a children’s book, participate in investigative reporting,  oral history/interviewing, and a write a research paper. During week #9, students worked on their interviewing skills with an emphasis on Oral History. Students were assigned an Oral History Assignment [here] that was due on 3/4/13 for 50pts. During week #10, students will continue The Art of Storytelling with an emphasis on How To Write a Research Paper. Specifically, students will be given direct instruction on How to Get Started, Selecting a Topic, Brainstorming, Types of Reports, and Getting Started Checklist.  They will also be taught about Finding Information, Evaluating Information, and How to Think Critically  & Finding Information on the Internet, Using Internet Resources, Tips for Using a Search Engine, and Search Engine References . On March 18th, students will be assigned a research paper that will be due on 3/22/13. Please encourage your students to actively participate in class as well as take good notes because it will serve as a good reference point when the actual assignment is assigned.
