Greetings! Here is an update for 7th Grade Language Arts (Literature & Writing). I have a hyperlink to my lesson plans for the week of 08/19/2013 to 08/23/2013. If you would like to view the lesson plans, please do so here >>> Lesson Plans for Week 3 – Quarter 1[click to open word document].
In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue Unit One – A Matter of Perspective in their Literature and Language textbook by reading Stolen Day, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and From Exploring The Titanic during week #3. During our in class reading, students are encouraged to take notes for comprehension in the following format – Question, Quotation (MLA Format), Characters, Setting, Connect, & Summarize. Those notes will help students with their ticket out of class via journal entries that they will be completing after daily reading. Students will work on Buckle Down AIMS for various reading comprehension skills as well. Students will also work on Week #3′s vocabulary words. This week students will be given Week #3′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have two assessments in the form of homework due on 08/20/2013 as well as a Vocabulary Quiz on 08/23/2013. I will be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday.
In Language Arts/Writing, students will continue Unit 1: Start From Scratch (Back To Basics). During this unit, students will learn the basic fundamentals of writing during their first 8 weeks of school. Students will learn how to correct themselves via capitalization, punctuation, building paragraphs, sentence structure, foundations of essay writing, and academic skills that will help them throughout the year to be successful. During Week #3, the focus will be on Paragraphs with an emphasis on Elaboration, Showing Not Telling, and Unity. Please encourage your students to be actively engaged during classroom time as well as be active note takers. All class notes will be updated in the Class Notes (Writing) section of this blog every time we take notes in class – they are welcome to print these out. Students will have their first big assignment in the form of a 5 paragraph essay. They will be assigned this on Thursday (8/22). They will be given in class time to complete assignment as well as the weekend. If you would like to preview that assignment, please go here >>> Revising Using COPS Assignment & Rubric.
