I will be sending home permission slips on Tuesday in Language Arts/Literature because we will be viewing The Pearl in class on 2/27 and 2/28. The students insisted they didn’t need permission slips, but I let them know PG stood for parental guidance. I also let them know that it’s a good thing to let parents know what their kids are viewing in class. The students have enjoyed this book thus far, and I can’t wait to show them the movie. I’m sure we will have our hands full with noting all the differences from the book and this adaptation…

We have complete the reading of John Steinbeck’s classic tale The Pearl. I would like to show the 2001 adaptation of the movie directed by Richard Harris and starring Lukas Haas. The rating for this movie is PG-13. Please fill out the form and check the appropriate box indicating whether or not your child has permission to view the movie. If you do not wish for your child to watch this movie, I will provide an alternative activity for them. Thank you for your time and consideration.” You can view the word document [here].

In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue their in class reading of  The Pearl by John Steinbeck. During our in class reading, students are required to take notes for comprehension in the following format – Question, Quotation (MLA Format), Characters, Setting, Connect, Conflict & Summarize. Those notes will help students with their ticket out of class via journal entries that they will be completing after daily reading. Journal entry requirements include students selecting a specific piece of text, cite it in MLA Format, and elaborate on why they selected that particular piece of text to cite. As enrichment, students will also be reading The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. However, this particular reading will only take place 10 pages at a time every Friday of Quarter 3. Students will be given a vocabulary guide [here] as well as other activities to help with comprehension due to The Time Machine’s difficult vocabulary. Students will also work on Buckle Down AIMS for various reading comprehension skills. This week students will be given Week #8′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have two assessments in the form of homework due on 02/25/14 as well as a quiz on 2/28/14. I will also be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday. Today the class (Language Arts/Writing periods 1 & 4) participated in a lesson based on the character of Caring. The lesson will start with an introduction as to what Caring exactly is. I will share information from a document I obtained from the Character Counts website [here] with the students – only using the 1st page of the document. We will then watch a montage of commercials via values.com I will then open it up for a brief discussion on what the students feel Caring is to them and how it applies to their daily routine. We will continue the lesson on Caring with an arts and crafts activity in which the students will design 8 by 11 inch posters about what Caring means to them in collaborative groups. We will then conclude the lesson by having each group select a speaker to present the groups poster to the rest of the class. The posters will be displayed in the classroom as well as near the library. If time permits, I would like to do a quick view & respond to Michael Jackson’s – Man in the Mirror. I would like to provide a visual to reinforce that Caring as well as change comes from within. I think this video will be a good discussion starter. Language Arts/Writing classes will work on (7.SL.1) & (7.SL.5) common core speaking/listening standards with a view & respond about the Michael Dunn/Jordan Davis case. The view & respond will be an article via CNN, “Michael Dunn convicted of attempted murder; hung jury on murder in ‘loud music’ trial.”  While reading this news story, students will be actively reading by writing down the 5W’s (who, what, where, when, and why. That handout can be viewed [here]. The class will then move to the viewing portion by watching this video via ABC News [here]. Students will be prompted to actively watch by using the 5W’s (who, what, where, when, and why). The classroom will then open up for discussion. Students will use their 5W’s observations to help guide this discussion.

This is a very serious topic. That being said, I believe the students will handle this accordingly as my students have done in the past.   One of my main objectives with this type of view and respond is to engage, effectively, in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) on topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own point(s) of views clearly. I hope to reach that outcome through the multimedia source presented as well as the news story that will be handout with guided prompts for the students. Continue reading

Valentine’s Day View & Respond – [History Behind the Holiday]

I had a lot on the agenda for February, 14th during Language Arts/Writing, but I thought it would be nice to add this. I think I will let the kids enjoy Valentine’s Day for a portion of the class. We’re currently working on investigative reporting, so this view and respond will tie in quite nicely. I will need to adjust the lesson plan and take out a previously planned activity, but I think this will be well worth it.

I will be working on (7.SL.1) & (7.SL.5) common core speaking/listening standards with this view & respond about the history behind Valentine’s Day. Students will begin class with a light-hearted bell work prompt about their favorite memory from Valentine’s Day if applicable. For those who don’t have favorable memories, I will prompt them to answer this question, if they could find out the history behind any holiday, which one would it be and why? After the bell work, students will be given a handout [here] in order to give students a synopsis of the multimedia clip as well as discussion questions. The class will then move to the viewing portion by watching this video [here]. Students will be prompted to actively watch by using the 5W’s (who, what, where, when, and why)… Students will be given about 5 to 7 minutes to answer the questions from the previously mentioned handout.
