Week #9: The Time Machine, journal entries, vocabulary HW & quiz, and How to Write a Research Paper…

Greetings! Here is an update for 7th Grade Language Arts (Literature & Writing). I have a hyperlink to my lesson plans for the week of 03/03/14 to 03/07/14. If you would like to view the lesson plans in detail, please do so here >>> Lesson Plans for Week 9 – Quarter 3[click to open word document].

In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue reading The Time Machine by H.G. Wells as enrichment. We will switch from strictly reading this on Fridays to in class reading throughout the week. We will attempt to complete the book by the end of the week. We will also watch the adapted movie filmed in 2002 starring Guy Pearce, Yancey Arias and Mark Addy. I will be sending home permission slips [here] on Tuesday. Students will be given a vocabulary guide [here] as well as other activities to help with comprehension due to The Time Machine’s difficult vocabulary. Students will also work on Buckle Down AIMS for various reading comprehension skills. I will also be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday.

In Language Arts/Writing, students will begin Unit 3: The Art of Storytelling. During this unit, students will learn how to express themselves by learning how to tell a story from beginning, middle, to end. Students will learn to write a short story, a children’s book, an investigative report, complete an oral history assignment, and a research paper. During Week #8,  students will continue with The Art of Story Telling with an emphasis on Research Papers. Students will be given direct instruction as well as participate in several activities that involve learning How to Write a Research Paper, How to Cite Sources, and How to Critically Think with the objective of students being able to locate and evaluate information about topic(s) or question(s), and eventually organizing, summarizing, and synthesizing the information into a finished product. Students will be assigned a Research Paper Assignment that can be viewed [here] next week, so it is important that they are actively engaged in all classroom activities pertaining to this assignment.
