In Language Arts/Literature, students will begin Unit Two – Scales of Justice in their Literature and Language textbook by reading Eleanor Roosevelt, Old Sly Eye, and From Nadia on My Way. Prior to our in class reading, we participate in classroom activities that coincide with each reading selection to gain a better comprehension. Students will also participate in journal entries in which they have to select a specific piece of text, cite it in MLA Format, and elaborate on why they selected that particular piece of text to cite. These journal entries will be done at least 3 times a week.  Students will also work on Buckle Down AIMS for various reading comprehension skills as well. Students will also work on Week #3′s vocabulary words. This week students will be given Week #3′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have two assessments in the form of homework due on 10/22/2013 as well as a vocabulary quiz on 10/25/2013. I will be pulling all of this year’s regularly scheduled vocabulary words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee & SAT lists for 7th Graders >>> [vocabulary guidelines & instructions]… Please make sure your student is completing their vocabulary homework every Monday because we will have a quiz assessment on those words every Friday. In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue Unit One – A Matter of Perspective in their Literature and Language textbook by reading Stolen Day, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and From Exploring The Titanic during week #3. During our in class reading, students are encouraged to take notes for comprehension in the following format – Question, Quotation (MLA Format), Characters, Setting, Connect, & Summarize. Those notes will help students with their ticket out of class via journal entries that they will be completing after daily reading. Students will work on Buckle Down AIMS for various reading comprehension skills as well. Students will also work on Week #3′s vocabulary words. In Language Arts/Literature, students have completed viewing an adaptation of Roots: The Saga of an American Family, a novel written by Alex Haley , first published in 1976. They were assigned a Roots Letter Writing Assignment [here], and it is due on 4/8/13. Students will begin reading The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway on Monday (4/8). During in class reading, students are encouraged to take notes for comprehension in the following format – Question, Predict, Setting, Connect, Summarize & Reflect… Those notes will help students with their ticket out of class via journal entries that they will be completing after daily reading. Students will participate in AIMS preparation via Galileo Assessment Technology practice worksheets with an emphasis on S2C1: Elements of Literature (4/10) as well as S3C2: Functional Text (4/12). Students will also work on Week #3′s vocabulary words. This week students will be given Week #3′s vocabulary words on Monday, and they will have two assessments in the form of homework due on 4/9/2013 as well as a Vocabulary Quiz on 4/12/2013. In Language Arts/Literature, students will continue viewing an adaptation of Roots: The Saga of an American Family, a novel written by Alex Haley , first published in 1976. It tells the story of Kunta Kinte, an 18th-century African, captured as an adolescent and sold into slavery in the United States, and follows his life and the lives of his alleged descendants in the United States.  During the view & responds, students will be actively watching via an episode guide that can be viewed [here]. The class will work on (7.SL.1) & (7.SL.5) common core speaking/listening standards with these view & responds. Students will participate in AIMS preparation via AIMS Buckle Down – Lesson: TBD. Students will also have extra help with comprehension of standards via Galileo Assessment Technology practice worksheets with an emphasis on S3C3: Author’s Purpose & Persuasive Strategies. Students will  be assigned Week #1′s vocabulary words. Students will be reading and responding to the following stories: Kelfala’s Secret Something, Prometheus, Where the Girl Saved Her Brother, Echo and Narcissus, The Emperor’s New Clothes, & How Odin Lost His Eye. Students will participate in AIMS preparation via AIMS Buckle Down – Lesson 12: Graphic Features Pgs. 146-154. Students will also be taking the Galileo Assessment for Literature on Tuesday & Wednesday of this week. In Language Arts/Literature, we will be completing our in class reading of  The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. Students will be actively reading pages 71 through 90 this week. Students will also be participating in a view & respond of The Time Machine adapted film from 2002. The movie stars Guy Pearce, Yancey Arias and Mark Addy. Permission slips were sent home on Friday. Students will learn how to write a short story, write a children’s book, participate in investigative reporting,  oral history/interviewing, and a write a research paper.  During week #4, students will learn how to write a children’s book via direct instruction, classroom activities, and note taking. Specifically students will learn about Narrative and Literary Writing Exploring a Child’s World, Creating Your Book, Reviewing Book, Publishing & Presenting via The Writer’s Craft textbook. Students will also participate in a view and respond to give them a visual as to how children’s books and/or stories unfold via multimedia viewing of The Three Little Pigs, The Grasshopper & The Ant, and The Hare & The Tortoise.
