Class in the news after Ludacris announces contest winner [KGun9 News & Arizona Daily Star]

I always tell my students, “put in the work and good things will happen.” As we went into Winter Break, students received some reinforcement to that notion as well as a little press for a competition in which they all participated in [read more about competition]. Although there could only be one winner, they all enjoyed hearing about their class as well as school in the news. They also, of course, enjoyed receiving a special shout out from Ludacris (see here). Above is footage from KGun9 News, and I was also able to find an article on the Arizona Daily Star. I didn’t have any luck finding KVOA Channel 4’s news article and/or footage, but we appreciate them as well. All in all, it was a good way to end 2013. I’m glad the news was able to shine some light on such positivity as well as help me reinforce that notion that working hard actually paying off. Looking forward to an even better 3rd & 4th Quarter in 2014…

Ludacris Announces Classroom Contest Winner [Video]

As the holiday season approaches, students have been getting anxious to find out who the winner will be for the Soul By Ludacris Headphone Contest. As an added bonus, Ludacris gave a special shout out to announce the class winner. The winner was extremely happy as well as shocked that Ludacris took the time to give her a special mention.

Soul By Ludacris Headphones Contest [Extrinsic Reward]

Soul by Ludacris SL150 Pro Hi-Definition On-Ear Headphones (Autographed)

Last year, I had a contest during the 4th Quarter to see who could receive the highest average in either Literature or Writing. The reward was a pair of custom Air Force Ones [see contest here]. I’ve decided this year to do a contest to give away a pair of Soul By Ludacris Headphones [see picture]. How it will work is pretty simple. I will show the headphones to the students, give them a few ground rules, and they will compete for the highest grade average. What I haven’t decided is the time frame of this contest. I’m thinking about either the first two quarters, or making it for the entire four quarters. If I do it for two quarters, it will make for a nice holiday gift. If I do it for the entire four quarters, it might motivate somebody for an entire year. We shall see and keep it TBD (feedback is welcome)…

A little extrinsic reward, you bet. I’ve had these headphones for awhile, and I rarely use them. They’re very good quality, but I don’t use them. I figured a student that works hard to win these will get a lot more use out of them. Lesson for the students, when you work hard for things, you give yourself an opportunity for good things to happen… On that same note, there is only one pair of headphones, so working hard, just like in life, might not get you what you want all the time. That being said, you still have to put forth the effort to give yourself an opportunity to be successful.

How To Keep Kids Engaged & Involved [#SummerTime]

#ExtrinsicReward

Did I mention, we have about 25 days until Summer Vacation? How do you keep kids active & engaged in class with about 25 days left until Summer Break? All of these questions ran through my head yesterday morning because I noticed a few students checking out. I wanted to do something fun as well as on task with the classroom discussion. I’m lucky that this group of kids is a great bunch as well as easy to please.

The activity is simple, and it occurs during as well as after direct instruction when it’s time to check for comprehension. Whoever has the most amount of money by the end of class will be the winner (see picture). You might be asking, how do the students earn this “money?” It’s pretty simple, the more correct questions answered during comprehension checks equals play money as well as a small prize at the end of class… Extrinsic reward, you bet’cha;)

Air Force One Contest [Extrinsic Reward]

I made my students a deal today, and it involves a pair of Air Force 1’s. My brother gave these to me, and I figured I would never wear them due to the colors as well as my age ;] Luckily, I teach students that may like those random colors. I told them the following:  If you wear a size 12 or close to that size, I will give you these shoes. One stipulation, you have to receive an A in either Language Arts/Writing or Language Arts/Literature during the 4th Quarter. If there are multiple students that receive an A, the tie breaker will be based on overall percentage in specific class. If two or more students have the same percentage, the tie breaker will be the highest average from both Language Arts/Writing and Language Arts/Literature…

A little extrinsic reward, you bet. I have had several students staring at the mini-poster [here] I have hanging on my white board trying to devise a plan in order to get the shoes. I told them that there is a simple way, do the work your assigned and do it to the best of your ability. Lesson for the students, when you work hard for things, you give yourself an opportunity for good things to happen… On that same note, there is only one pair of shoes, so working hard, just like in life, might not get you want you want all the time. That being said, you still have to put forth the effort to give yourself an opportunity to be successful.
